What to Look For When Choosing LPN Programs Online

LPN programs online are becoming a more popular choice of people who want to join the nursing profession.

Among the most common reasons they prefer LPN programs online over the other programs is the significantly shorter time it takes to complete the course, which means immediate job opportunities and early earnings. Graduates of LPN nursing schools, whether online or on-campus, also enjoy wide and diverse career opportunities. The demand for their services is not only high in hospitals, their services are also sought after in corporate health offices, clinics, health care agencies and other similar institutions.

The work of licensed practical nurses is general in nature. They care for the sick, the convalescent, the disabled and babies, under the supervision of a registered nurse or a physician. They administer medicines, gather a patient’s data, get samples from the patient for laboratory test, and others.

People who are interested to be a licensed practical nurse but are too busy to enrol in conventional campus education can now take the course online. Almost every university now offers many of their programs online, including nursing programs. These programs are ideal for people who are working day jobs or have families to take care, or are in a rural area and far from universities.

Checking a School’s Legitimacy

What should one look for before deciding which of the LPN programs online to choose? First is the legitimacy of the online school. A legitimate nursing school should have regional or national accreditation issued by the appropriate government agency, usually the Department of Education. Also check the school’s reputation. There are many schools that offer LPN programs online but not all of them enjoy a good reputation. Choose schools whose name has become synonymous to quality education.

Another way of checking the reputation of the school is to trace its history. Most trusted educational institutions enjoy years of good standing in the community and the country. Along with that, verify the credentials of the professors and officials of the school. You don’t have to check each one of them, but you will get an idea of how reputable a school’s teaching staff is by just checking on its top officials’ credentials.

A school’s roster of graduates will also give one an idea of the quality of education being offered by a school. A university is good if most of its graduates occupy top positions in government and the corporate world.

Online School’s Non-academic Component

Studying to be a licensed practical nurse online is just like taking other courses online. A student “attends” classes online, interacts with the instructor and sometimes with “classmates” online and takes exams and joins discussions online.

But like any other online programs, LPN programs online require the student to still come to campus on designated time, and to go to an accredited hospital for his or her clinical, or non-academic, training. Universities have affiliated hospitals and medical institutions where their online students can take their on-the-job training. This is one requirement in any nursing school that cannot be done online for obvious reasons.
